What this service is

Word Count Kit is a free, browser-based measurement tool operated by Word Wise. You may use it for personal, academic and commercial writing without charge and without an account.

The service is the web pages themselves. There is no software to install, no account to hold, no stored document and no subscription. Because nothing is stored on our side, there is nothing to suspend, migrate or lose: closing the tab ends your use of the service completely, and opening it again starts a fresh one.

You keep every right in the text you put into the editor. Nothing you write here is transmitted to us, so no licence to it is granted, requested or possible. The counting rules, the written guides and the design of the site remain the property of the operator.

Estimates are estimates

Reading time, speaking time and page counts are calculated from rates and formatting conventions that are stated on each page. They are planning figures, not guarantees. Actual reading speed varies with the reader and the material; actual speaking time varies with pace, pauses and audience; actual page counts vary with your font, margins, headings and figures.

Do not rely on these figures alone where a hard limit has consequences. Check against the system that will actually measure your work.

The same applies to the word and character counts themselves, which are exact arithmetic under a stated rule rather than universal truths. Word processors and submission systems apply different rules, particularly to hyphenated compounds, web addresses and numbers, and a count from this site is not a representation that any other system will report the same figure. Where an institution names the counter it uses, that counter is the one that decides.

Academic use

This tool measures text you have already written. It does not generate, rewrite, paraphrase or complete text, and it is not designed to help anyone submit work that is not their own. Using it does not exempt you from your institution's academic integrity rules, which remain your responsibility.

No warranty

The service is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or accuracy. To the extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for any loss arising from use of the service, including missed limits, rejected submissions or overrunning presentations.

No promise is made that the service will be available at any particular time. It may be interrupted for maintenance, changed, or withdrawn. Because your work is never stored here, an interruption cannot cost you a document — but it can cost you access at an inconvenient moment, so do not make a deadline depend on a website you do not control.

Advertising and third-party services

The free service is funded by advertising served by Google, which places advertisements in three fixed positions and never inside, above or over the editor. Those advertisements are supplied by a third party, and their content is neither written nor selected by the operator; an advertisement appearing here is not an endorsement of the advertiser.

Dealings with an advertiser are between you and them. If an advertisement is misleading, offensive or broken, reporting it is useful and the operator can pass it upstream, but any transaction you enter into is governed by that advertiser's own terms and not by these.

What advertising is permitted to do here is limited by design. It cannot read the editor, and no script on this site transmits your text. The privacy policy explains what advertising cookies do and how to switch them off.

Acceptable use

Do not attempt to disrupt the service, misrepresent it as your own product, or use it in a way that breaks the law where you are.

Automated access at a volume that degrades the site for other people is not permitted. Everything here runs in your own browser, so there is no rate limit to work around and no benefit in scripting it: the counting code is doing exactly the same work whether a person or a script triggers it.

Who these terms are with, and which law applies

These terms are between you and Word Wise, the operator of this site, whose contact address is on the contact page. They are governed by the law of the operator's place of establishment, without prejudice to any protection you are entitled to as a consumer under the mandatory law of the country where you live.

If any provision here is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply. Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

Changes

These terms may be updated. The date at the top of this page is the date of the current version, and continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

There is no mailing list to notify, because there is no account and no email address on file. If you rely on these terms in a professional setting, the date at the top is what to check.
